2nd ODI, Emirates Old Trafford
Australia 315-7 (50 overs) beat England 227 (44.2 overs) by 88 runs

Australia beat England by 88 runs in the second one-day international to go 1-0 up in the five match series, and it was largely thanks to a century from their captain Michael Clarke.

England won the toss and somewhat surprisingly elected to field first on what looked a good batting surface in Manchester. Australia posted a commanding 315-7 from their 50 overs as Clarke made 105 from 102 balls.

Clarke was well supported by George Bailey who made a breath-taking 82 from 67 balls as the pair put on 155 for the fourth wicket. There was also contributions from Aaron Finch (45) and Shane Watson (38).

England’s bowlers struggled to contain Australia’s batsmen at any stage, but the pick of the attack was Boyd Rankin who finished with 2-47 from his 10 overs.

In reply Australia bowled with pace and aggression and had England in trouble from the off. Michael Carberry, Jonathan Trott and Joe Root all fell cheaply leaving England 38-3.

Kevin Pietersen did his best to get the chase back on track, but when he fell for 60 from 66 balls England knew the writing was on the wall.

Eoin Morgan (54) and Jos Buttler (75) did give the crowd some entertainment down the order but England were eventually bowled out for 227 in 44.2 overs.

The teams now move onto Edgbaston where England will be looking to bounce straight back in what is now a must win match. They must also look at the balance of their side in a little more detail as it is felt that they are currently a bowler light.

Mitchell Johnson looks back to his best. At 95 mph + they can’t jit him to the left or the right.
