England got off to winning ways on their tour of New Zealand with a comfortable Twenty20 victory over a New Zealand XI in Whangarei today.
Batting first, England scored 186-3 from their allotted 20 overs. Jos Buttler top scored for the visitors with a scintillating 57 from just 24 balls. The Somerset batsman’s innings included 6 fours and 3 towering sixes. Eoin Morgan also played his part with a classy 48 in helping get England to a defendable score.
New Zealand XI were dismissed for 140, falling 46 runs short of their target, largely thanks to early wickets from Chris Woakes (3-27), and Jade Dernbach (3-24).
Stuart Broad then finished the match in style for England by taking a hat-trick in the penultimate over of the match sealing the victory. After returning home early from India these wickets will hopefully give Broad the boost in confidence he needs.
England will face the same opponents again on Wednesday, before the first of three Twenty20 internationals begin on Saturday.
