England fast bowler Stuart Broad has been ruled out for the remainder of England’s tour of Sri Lanka with a strain in his right calf.

Broad will fly home immediately in order to get treatment on the injury ahead of England’s upcoming series with the West Indies, starting on 17th May at Lord’s.

With only one Test match remaining in the series, England have decided not to call an additional player into the squad. Steven Finn and Tim Bresnan will fight it to replace Broad. There is also the possibility that both men will play in the second Test with Bresnan to bat at 7 at the expense of Samit Patel.

Broad himself doesn’t see the injury as too serious when he tweeted: ‘Annoyed to be going home a week early. Not a major injury just couldn’t get through a whole Test match. Thanks for the messages’

England begin the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Tuesday knowing that a victory is required in order to avoid anything other than defeat on Sri Lanka soil.

This is a big loss for England. The question is who will replace him?
