3rd Test, Sydney Cricket Ground
Sri Lanka 294 (Thirimanne 91, Jayawardene 72, Bird 4-41, Starc 3-71) v Australia

Australia will be pleased with their first day efforts at the SCG after bowling Sri Lanka out for 294 in the final over of the day.

Sri Lanka had put themselves into a good position at 250-5 in the final session of the day, but the Australian seamers blew away the Sri Lankan lower order in a devastating final hour. Jackson Bird in just his second Test match claimed 4-41, but he was well supported by Mitchell Starc (3/71) and Peter Siddle (2/46).

The home side were led out onto the field by Michael Hussey who is playing in his final Test match after deciding to retire from all formats of the game. The Sydney crowd gave Hussey a standing ovation as he arrived which was nothing short of what the Western Australian deserved for his efforts for his country.

Lahiru Thirimanne top scored for the visitors with 91 from just 151 balls in what was a stylish innings in just his 8th Test match. However, he fell victim to Nathan Lyon’s only wicket of the day when he was caught by David Warner leaving the 23 year old nine short of a century. Thirimanne was given good support by Mahela Jayawardene who scored 72 from 110 balls.

On what looks a good surface for batting, Australia will be looking forward to tomorrow when they hope to build a first innings lead in pursuit of a whitewash over the tourists.

Without Lasith Malinga or Muttiah Muralitharan it is hard to see how Sri Lanka will contain the Australian batting line up on this wicket.
