Australia eased to a 1-0 series lead after a comfortable nine wicket win over New Zealand at The Gabba this morning.

It was the young debutant James Pattinson who they had to thank for setting up this victory, as he claimed 5-27 in New Zealand’s second innings, from 11 inspired overs of bowling.

Going into their second innings New Zealand knew they had to perform well to avoid anything other than defeat as they trailed by 132 runs. Pattinson and the other Australian bowlers were too good in what was a performance that was more like the Australia of old as they dismissed the visitors for just 150.

Despite losing Phil Hughes for just 7, Australia got to their 19 run target off just 14 balls with David Warner hitting three boundaries in the process.

With first innings runs for both Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke things are starting to look good for Australia, and they will be hoping to wrap up the series against New Zealand in Hobart which starts on Thursday.
