Dubai International Stadium, First Test
Day 1: England 192 v Pakistan 42-0

Saeed Ajmal recorded career best figures of 7-55 today, as England had a nightmare start to their Test series with Pakistan in Dubai.

Andrew Strauss won the toss, and on a flat looking batting surface elected to bat under clear blue skies. However, the visitors were soon in trouble, as they slumped to 43-5 before lunch. Pakistan brought spin into the attack within the first hour of the Test match, and England’s batsmen looked all at sea.

On a wicket that was not offering a great amount of spin, England struggled to cope with Ajmal’s variations, as five of his seven wickets were gained through lbw. There was a further wicket each for spinners Mohammad Hafeez and Abdul Rehman, as England lost 9 wickets today to slow bowlers. The only wicket that England lost to a seam bowler was that of Jonathan Trott, who was dismissed by Cheema for 17.

England will be hugely grateful to Matt Prior, who was the only batsman to record a half century for the tourists. Prior finished on 70 not out from 154 balls in a patent innings that included just 3 fours. Prior put on 57 for the 8th wicket with Graeme Swann and without this, England would have been in deeper trouble. Swann added 34 from 65 balls, proving that England have strength in depth to their batting.

Ajmal took the final wicket of the innings by removing James Anderson, and left the field to a standing ovation, from what was a small crowd in the Dubai International Stadium.

To make matters worse for England, in 15 overs of bowling in the final session, they were unable to take a single Pakistani wicket, as Hafeez and Umar guided the adopted home side to 42/0 at stumps.

England could not have envisaged a worse start to their tour, and will know they are along way behind in this game already. England must pick up early wickets tomorrow morning if they are to stand any chance of winning this first Test match.
