Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been included in Hampshire’s squad for October’s ICC Champions League pre-qualifying tournament which will take place in South Africa.
The South Coast County lifted the domestic Twenty20 trophy last month to secure their place in the competition. Afridi did not feature for Hampshire this year in their campaign despite constant speculation that he would arrive in time to play. Afridi did represent Hampshire in the 2011 Twenty20 competition.
Hampshire face tough opposition from the Auckland Aces (New Zealand) and Sialkot Stallions (Pakistan) in the pre-qualifying group. The winner of this group goes through to the Champions League proper which also takes place in South Africa.
Australian Glenn Maxwell has been named as Hampshire’s second overseas player for the tournament.
Speaking of the signing of Afridi and Maxwell, Hampshire’s cricket manager Giles White said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Shahid and Glenn have elected to join us for the ICC Champions League Twenty20 competition. Both Glenn and Shahid have proven themselves to be valuable additions to the squad in recent years”
