Advantage West Indies in Roseau

April 24, 2012

3rd Test, Roseau
West Indies 212/7 (90 overs) v Australia

Australia closed day 1 in Roseau on 212/7 after winning the toss and batting in the third Test knowing that anything other than defeat would secure a series victory over West Indies.

Australia had started the day well, when David Warner (50) and Shane Watson (41) had taken the score to 84-1. However Australia lost wickets at regular intervals for the reaminder of the day with no other batsman other than Warner passing 50.

29 year old Shane Shillingford was the pick of the West Indies bowlers as he claimed 4-77 from 34 overs of off-spin bowling. The local boy troubled all the Australian batsman and picked up the crucial wickets of Ponting (23), Clarke (24) and Hussey (10).

Ricky Ponting reached a landmark as he went past Rahul Dravid to go second on the list of leading run-getters in Tests.

Australia were grateful to an unbeaten stand of 43 from Matthew Wade (22*) and Mitchell Starc (24*) who took the tourists to stumps. Both men will resume this morning knowing that more runs are required in order to put Australia back into a strong position in this match.
