Sangakkara denies England

England were left frustrated at The Rose bowl yesterday as they drew the final Test match with Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka have their stand in captain Kumar Sangakkara to thank for this as he produced his best performance of the series on its final day. Sangakkara recorded his maiden Test match hundred in England, as he made a backs to the wall 119 to save the match.

At tea, Sri Lanka had reached 334-5 when the rain came and the two captains shook hands. Sri Lanka’s lead had reached 141 and even without the rain Sri Lanka would have likely held on for a draw. Thilan Samaraweera also made a vital contribution with a counter attacking 87 in a partnership of 141 with his captain.

England will be disappointed not to have forced a positive result in Southampton yesterday, but the truth of the matter is that they just did not bowl well enough in what was again helpful conditions.

With the Indian’s arriving shortly for a four match Test series, England will know that they must improve in order to beat the current number one ranked team in the world.
